Sign Compatibility, Meaning Sun Sign Compatibility, is Incomplete...

When talking about sign compatibility most people talk about Sun sign compatibility.

Indeed, when people talk about their sign, they mean their Sun sign.

When you say that you're a Scorpio, this only means that, at the time of your birth, the Sun was in the sign of Scorpio.

BUT the Sun is just one single point in the horoscope.

There are the other points/bodies and planets too: the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the Moon's Node (to name just these!).

Each planet has a different meaning.

The Sun symbolizes - among other things - your vital energy, willpower, the self, the ego and your physical body and its (creative self-)expression.

The Moon signifies your mood, emotions, instinctive needs for comfort and security etc....

According to their position in the natal chart and in the astrological signs, all planets have their own particular meaning.

When we talked about sign compatibility we already mentioned that sign compatibility is related to the four elements.

With sun sign compatibility it's just the same.

Sun signs are compatible when they are posited in signs of the same or a compatible element.

But if you only compare the sun signs you are only looking at the possible solar compatibility (Sun sign compatibility) and neglecting all the rest.

In Switzerland, Gunter Sachs has done some scientific research (with the help of the Faculty of Statistics of the "Ludwig-Maximilians-University" in München, Germany) during 1995-1997.

Though the results of the research were highly significant in favor of astrology, the research was very controversial and much disputed.

Of most interest here, is the fact that his research has been looking at Sun sign compatibility too, delivering highly significant results as well.

Only a few people know that Gunter Sachs' research was done over in France, during 1999 by Didier Castille.

In 2014-2015, Bernt Hunze, a (retired) Medical Doctor, analyzed the results again (1,004,390 Swiss marriages concluded between 1987-2010 and investigated by Gunter Sachs and 6,498,320 French marriages concluded between 1976-1997).

The results regarding the investigation on Sun sign compatibility confirmed the initial results by Sachs!

What have these investigations found?

There is a highly significant correlation that a marriage occurs when partners have the following Sun sign (meaning that there is a lot of attraction):

So, Sun sign compatibility absolutely has its merit, but our point is just that mere Sun sign compatibility is INCOMPLETE.

In a 2011 study, Raj Paode, Ph.D., scientifically tested two astrological claims:

1. does your Sun sign influence your personality?
2. does Sun and Moon sign compatitibility influence your marriage choice?

The results were published in his book The Scientific Truth About Sun and Moon Signs.

Regarding the 2nd claim, the researcher wanted to find out if couples with harmonious Sun signs are more likely to marry while couples with disharmonious Sun signs have lower chances of marriage.

The quality of the marriage (happy or unhappy marriages) was not part of this research study!

To investigate this claim, Raj Paode compared actual marriages between couples with compatible signs and couples with incompatible signs, with expected marriages based upon random chance.

Each zodiac sign has three compatible zodiac signs, three incompatible signs and six neutral signs.

The Sun sign compatibility evaluation was done on two different sample sets:

• 57 couples in which at least one partner was a Hollywood celebrity
• 357,763 Swiss married couples (all the marriages in Switzerland from 1987 to 1994)

Two types of tests were administered to determine if there was a statistically significant link between Sun sign harmony and disharmony and marital choice: the t test and the Chi Square.

The Results

Sun signs have a far greater effect on the marriages involving Hollywood stars.

They have 75% greater chance of marrying a person from a compatible sign and a 65% lower chance of marrying a person from an incompatible zodiac sign.

The magnitude of the effect of Sun signs for the general population was much lower than that observed for the Hollywood celebrities but still statistically significant.

After all it's just statistics, and your reality can be totally different!

Statistical research is about probabilities and likelihood. It's not about (hard) facts that occur in any event.

It's not about planetary patterns and configurations that infallibly describe traits, events, the outcome... at all times.
